[S]oftshells... aren’t all dinner-plate-sized or smaller; some are giants, among the largest of turtles.


Pictures of an enormous Trionyx triunguis found dead near the mouth of the Congo River with a total carapace length of over a meter and an estimated weight of 60 kg. There are cryptozoological stories of much larger individuals with carapace diameters of 4 or 5 meters.

Taskavak & Akcinar (2009) record an ever larger Trionyx triunguis caught in a trawler in deep (55 meter) marine waters off Turkey.
